Advancing government support for green building materials in Malaysia

Client: A non-profit organization formed by building material suppliers in Malaysia.
Issue: Energy efficiency has become an important topic of concern as people across the world are increasingly aware about the impact of resource depletion and climate change. The client had interests in promoting the usage of green building materials to improve energy efficiency in buildings (which currently account for over 30% of the nation's electricity consumption). However, the government's support and policies would be a crucial driver for any such movement to succeed.
Solution: Solidiance understood that the client needed not only facts and data to help them justify the case for improving energy efficiency in buildings, but also a road map backed by facts to help them target the right decision makers with the biggest impact.
Approach: Solidiance assisted the client through a three-pronged approach. Firstly, to provide benchmarking case studies on how other countries have managed to successfully implement green building material related policies. This provided insights on what would be effective program structures, as well as desired outcomes and pitfalls. Secondly, to conduct an in-depth analysis on the potential return on investment for Malaysia (public and private sectors) should the nation uptake a building energy efficiency program. Thirdly, a thorough mapping of the relevant decision makers and influencers within the Malaysian government related organizations to understand who our client should actively target their lobbying activities to at each stage of their marketing effort.
Engagement ROI: Solidiance helped our client to develop a pitch to the related government organizations, as well as obtain endorsement of the reported energy savings benefits. Today, the client is in the process of promoting the issue to the various stakeholders and the public, as well as preparing for an increased future demand for green building materials in Malaysia and Singapore.
