The re-imposition of sanctions by the US on Iran has dealt a hammer blow to the country's emerging automotive industry. The threat of retaliation by the US against those whom it deems to have a broken those sanctions has prompted automotive makers and logistics companies in Iran to pull out of the market. Iran was Renault's eighth largest market in 2017 with sales of 162.079, up from eleventh in 2016. Erika Welch, Partner at management consulting firm Solidiance commented the biggest bottleneck to enter Iran's automotive market is its inability to improve the freight transport infrastructure. According to her, the road is over 1.500 km and takes over 19 hours to travel from Bandar Abbas to Tehran.
